    Goodbye 2008

    Will you miss this year?

Sometimes you feel a little wistful on New Year's Eve, and sometimes you're happy to see a year come to an end.

    Things I won't miss from 2008:

Gas prices over $4 a gallon.
    Negative campaign ads.
    Kids bringing guns to school.
200 (or 300 or 400)-point drops on the market.
Stories about the alleged "battle" between Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie.
Nancy Grace exploiting the Caylee Anthony tragedy.

    Things I'll treasure:

The Miami Dolphins' amazing team effort!
'Pushing Daisies' and 'Life On Mars', two wonderfully inventive t.v. shows.
Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer battling for the top spot in tennis.
    Michael Phelps' record-setting Olympic performance.
Great new music - and lyrics - from Leona Lewis, John Mayer, Sara Bareilles and Coldplay.
Gloria Estefan and Alonzo Mourning's incredible charitable efforts for South Florida.
Kimba's scones (the girl can bake!).

    Animal heroes.

Taking my Dad to see "Monty Python's Spamalot" at the Arsht Center.

    Hugs.

    Feeling hopeful again.

What will you remember most from 2008? What are you happy to say adios to?

    'Sea' the Inauguration

There are no hotel rooms left for the January 20th inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama, but there's an alternative sleeping arrangement - onboard a cruise ship.

The 'Yes We Can 2009 Cruise' on Imperial Majesty's MV Regal Empress departs Port Everglades January 16th, arriving in Baltimore on the 19th, with shuttle service to the inauguration on the 20th. It's a pretty nifty way to sneak in some history lessons with the family vacation.

Pet Therapy Pic of the Week

From Lite Loyal Listener, Liz, in Boca Raton:
"Monty came to us at the tender age of 6 weeks. We sure have babied him! He sits on couches and sleeps in our bed. When I get up in the morning and get out of bed, Monty moves onto my pillow and settles in for another few hours.
Monty helps me keep my heart full of love. As an empty nester, I have a lot of extra love to give -- Monty gets it and I get the reward for giving it. Lots of love around here -- you can doggone count on it! Here he is -- enjoying a morning snooze."
He's beautiful, thanks for sharing, Liz!

Pet Therapy Pic of the Week

This is from LITE FM Loyal Listener Debbie in Coral Springs.

"I was on a road trip up north and it was the first time I brought my cats, Smokey and Xena for any trip longer than down University Drive to the vet.

They were yowling non-stop, so I let them out of their cages and they both made a beeline for my lap. Well, it's not quite like being on the couch at home, so they improvised.

That's Smokey on top. He's definitely 'alpha' cat. But Xena didn't seem to mind, and I didn't either. They made the 16-hour drive fun, and I got unconditional love (as long as I feed them)!

    A two-rainbow day

It's hard to be in a bad mood when you see a rainbow - but two in one hour? That even makes up for rush hour traffic this morning.

What is it that's so captivating about rainbows?

The science that makes them appear?
The pretty colors in the sky (ever think about what it would be like if the sky was multi-colored every day?!)
The mythology of the 'pot 'o gold' at the end of the rainbow?

What do you love about rainbows?

    Closure for the Walshes

It's been 27 years since 6-year old Adam Walsh was abducted from a Fort Lauderdale strip mall and later found dead. Only now have Hollywood police found evidence linking the suspected killer to the case - even though Ottis Toole died in prison more than a decade ago. At least Adam's parents, John and Reve Walsh, finally know who was responsible. They've posted a letter on the America's Most Wanted website. (John Walsh created the show in response to what happened ... and since it began airing, more than 1000 fugitives have been captured.)

    Found! Disney's Sugar Cookies

    Yes, it's true.

    One of these things
    is not
    like the other.
    On the left:

Walt Disney World's Sugar Cookies, as served at the Swan and Dolphin Resort.
    On the right:
    My sugar cookies.

Yes, mine may not be as pretty, but notice there are only 3 cookies left on the plate :).
Proof that it's what's inside that counts.
Here's the awesome Disney World sugar cookie recipe I've been raving about.
    Ingredients:
    3 ½ Cups Sifted Flour
    2 ½ Tsp. Baking Powder
    ½ Tsp. Salt
    1 ½ Cubes Sweet Butter (6 Oz.)
    2 Tsp. Vanilla
    1 ½ Cups Granulated Sugar
    2 Tbsp. Sour Cream
    1 Lemon (Grated Rind Only)
    2 Eggs
    1 Tbsp. Milk

    Method of Preparation:
Sift together flour, baking powder and salt.
Cream butter, vanilla, sugar, sour cream, lemon peel and beat well.
Add eggs, one at a time, and then milk. Gradually add the sifted dry ingredients.
Let the dough rest for a minimum of 3 hours in the refrigerator then roll down to desired thickness.
    Cut into Christmas shapes.
Bake in a 340° oven for 8-10 minutes.
Wait until completely cool and decorate with icing.
Presentation: Place cookies on serving plate of your choice.

    Santa in Fur

This is the kind of fur even PETA would love.

Of course, you can always bring a little friend home with you for the holidays. Here are the Humane Society's available adoptees.

    Pet Therapy

Have you ever been late to work because you just couldn't say goodbye to your pet in the morning? I was actually tempted to call in sick this morning when Murray presented me with this belly and that look. Irresistible.
I know I'm not the only one who gets immeasurable joy from pets. There's a reason many retirement homes bring dogs on therapy visits to their residents, and the company of cats is recommended to help reduce blood pressure. And let's not forget the fish in your doctor's aquarium that help you relax before your exam.

    The Wonder of Walt

I'm here at Walt Disney World to kick off LITE FM's Very Merry Weekend of holiday music, and the joy is contagious. Seriously, I don't think it's possible to be in a bad mood when you're at a Disney Park. Children don't cry, adults don't complain, and from what I understand from the people who live here (because certainly no one "works" at Disney, do they?) - calories don't count. Good thing, because you'll definitely want to sample the sugar cookies they give out at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party (at the Magic Kingdom Dec. 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18 & 19). In fact, I just learned from T.C., Walt Disney World's Ambassador, that you can have the recipe for anything you eat here just by asking. So I'll definitely be making Walt Disney World sugar cookies for the holidays this year.

    Instant muscles for men

Women have spanx. Now men have equmen.

Just as we sometimes want a little firming action for certain body parts without spending hours doing leg lifts and crunches, men want to look a little more muscular - without having to put in all that time lifting weights. Equmen has the solution. It's the "core precision undershirt", made with - what else - lycra. It's said to make a guy look built up in the right places, and slimmed down in the love handles. Will he be grateful if you give him one for a gift? Only you know your guy that well.

    Take a look.

    Nobel Peace Concert

What better time than the holidays to celebrate people who work toward peace on earth?

The Nobel Peace Prize concert honors this year's recipient of the Prize and gives us a great line-up of artists, too, including Diana Ross, Jason Mraz and Il Divo.

    Lean Cuisine Recall

How about a little blue plastic with your chicken?

    Maybe not...

Lean Cuisine is recalling three of their frozen chicken meals that may have pieces of hard blue plastic in them. You'll want to check the production codes and use-by dates on the Pesto Chicken with Bow-Tie Pasta, Chicken Mediterranean and Chicken Tuscan. The USDA has all the info, as well as a phone number to call if you have questions.

    Good to give up ...

    smoking, that is.

We're socialized to think that we should never give up, never quit ... and that's all well and good when you're talking about trying to get a job, or achieving a level of accomplishment at a sport. But when it comes to smoking, quitting is good and to be celebrated.

This Thursday, November 20th, is the Annual Great American Smokeout, sponsored by the American Cancer Society. If you've thought about quitting and need some tips to get started; are already trying to quit and need some extra support; or haven't made the commitment yet and are still looking for a good reason to give up your coffee-break buddy, check out the ACS website for all of the above.

    Turkey tips

It's the time of year when people who never cook the rest of the year undertake a huge feast for the entire family. Of course, turkey is usually the centerpiece on the Thanksgiving table, and anyone who's cooked a turkey from scratch before can tell you - it really helps to know what you're doing. Things like removing the giblet bag, basting and baking for just the right amount of time can make all the difference in how tender and tasty your turkey turns out.

Fortunately, Butterball is here to talk us through as they do every year. You can call the Butterball Turkey Talk Line at 1-800-Butterball, or get all the info (and recipes) online at www.butterball.com.

    See history made

    January 20th, 2009.

That's the date that Barack Obama will be inaugurated the 44th President of the United States - and the 1st African American President.

While admission to the dozen or so inaugural balls can be fairly pricey, the 240,000 tickets to the actual inauguration are free - as long as no one tries to scalp them. Some reports predict tickets may be sold online for as much as $40,000 - but California Senator Dianne Feinstein is working on a bill that would make scalping the tickets a federal crime.

Obviously, tickets go automatically to members of Congress, Supreme Court justices and the families of the President and the President-elect. But the public can also obtain tickets through Congressional offices. Here are details on the process.

    Unhappy at work?

We all have tough days at work, but if you're at the point where you dread getting up every day, you may be one of the 50 percent of people who are "unhappily employed". Whether it's because you don't get paid what you think you're worth, you don't get respect from your boss, or you just don't like what you do, it can affect your mood about everything else in your life.

The good news is, you can make changes to make you happier. Career Navigators is a new organization that offers free career coaching and guidance - everything from updating your resume to rehearsing how to introduce yourself at a networking event.

You can e-mail the founder, Bill Grunau, directly at navigators@flamingoroad.com; and listen to South Florida Spotlite this Sunday night at 11:30 to hear Bill and career coach Stanley Zamor offer tips on re-energizing your career.

    "Time to Unite"

In a historic end to a historic Presidential campaign, Barack Obama was elected the first African-American President of the United States. It was hard not to get misty-eyed when he spoke about how far the country has come from the days when women and African-Americans weren't even allowed to vote, much less be candidates for President or Vice-President.

Both candidates were incredibly eloquent and gracious in their end-of-campaign speeches, and Sarah Palin gets credit for the quote above, that it's "time to unite".

I expect it'll be difficult finding extra copies of today's newspapers - I know I'm keeping a copy to go with my collection of amazing headlines that includes man landing on the moon and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Here's a site where you can not only see our local newspaper headlines, but also the front pages from the rest of the country and newspapers from all over the world. It's fascinating!

    Halloween for big kids

Yeah, that's us I'm talking about. Adults. Every year we seem to take over a little more of Halloween than the year before, to the point where it's become as much of a holiday for us as for the kids - maybe even more so. This year AAA is actually offering their Tow-to-Go service for Halloween - usually reserved for holidays like New Year's. And now, there are even Halloween-themed alcoholic beverages. Try this one (but keep the tow-to-go number handy - 1-800-AAA-HELP!):

    Candy Corn Martini:
    (recipe courtesy of Orzel Vodka)

Fill a martini shaker with ace
Combine 2 1/2 ounces of chilled vodka and 1/2 ounce of pumpkin liqueur.
    Shake well.
Place a few candy carons at the bottom of a martini glass.
Strain the mixture into the glass over the candy corn.

    Gloria's favorite foods

I'm sure we all have our favorite place to go in South Florida for authentic Cuban Cuisine. Now we can make it at home too, with recipes from Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

Next month, Penguin Books releases 'Estefan Kitchen', a collection of the Estefan's favorite family recipes. I've got my taste buds set on the Masitas de Puerco (Fried Pork Chunks); although the Papas Rellenas (Breaded Mashed Potatoes with ground Beef Creole) sounds like a winner, too.

The book can be pre-ordered at amazon.com.

    No honking zone

I was on vacation in the Cumberland Plateau area of Tennessee last week, and I kid you not, I didn't hear one horn honk for five days! Talk about heaven. I was near the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area - and that's just one of about 18 state and national parks around there. I've had a dream of having just a little piece of land with some trees -and this area has exactly that, plus peace, quiet and lots of friendly people.

I've been living in South Florida since 1962, so seeing the leaves change on trees just floors me. I was in awe of the brilliant colors - purples and gold and orange and red, all blending together in a true display of autumn. Up until now, the only way I knew it was autumn was from the different color wrapping on Halloween candy! If you ever get a chance to go north when the leaves are changing, do it, at least once. In fact, Big South Fork, the company developing the land, has specials when you tour the area by November 21st. You can click on the link at the top of my blog page. And let me know what you think after you see it.

    Too much to remember

I blame information overload for just about everything these days, particularly my bad memory. I figure my brain is full and there's no room left for new information.

There's probably more to it than that - stress can affect memory and lack of sleep and less than ideal eating habits also have an impact. So in the big picture, exercising, reducing stress, and eating foods high in Vitamin B will all help. But for the specifics, there are techniques you can use to remember things like names, phone numbers and dates. Here's a complete guide.

    Debate or Spin?

I have to admit, I love watching the Presidential and Vice-Presidential debates. It's a chance to see the candidates unedited. Even when they're repeating their sound bites over and over, at least you can see their expressions when the other candidate is talking, and sometimes you get a genuine, unscripted, honest response.

Of course, the spin afterward is totally predictable. Supporters of each candidate will tell us how well their candidate did, and how poorly the other person performed. I say, skip the spin and form your own opinion.

Tonight is the only face-to-face between Joe Biden and Sarah Palin, but we still have two more debates between John McCain and Barack Obama to look forward to:

Tuesday, October 7th - this will be a town hall format. All questions will come from members of the audience or from questions submitted online. Here's where you can submit a question.

Wednesday, October 15th - this debate will focus on domestic policy. CBS Newsman Bob Schieffer will moderate this more casual debate - the candidates will be seated (maybe they'll even look at each other ... ).

    Understand our ballots

As we get closer to election day, I thought I'd do a little research on some of the non-Presidential issues that'll be on the Florida ballots. You know - those amendments and referendums that are always filled with double and triple-negatives and are so difficult to understand that you think you're voting one way, and you find out later that you voted the opposite of what you wanted?

Well, ballotpedia.org is like a voting wikipedia. It explains the amendments that will be on the November ballot and also lists all the initiatives that didn't make the ballot. For example, a proposal to lower the state voting age to 16 couldn't get enough signatures to make the ballot. And a proposal to do away with alimony didn't make it. Even a couple of attempts to put limits on property taxes couldn't get enough signatures to go for a statewide vote.

It's fascinating to see what didn't make it to the ballot, but also important to understand the amendments that we will be voting on.

    Here's the guide.

    Lite the NIght

Wow, where has a year gone?

It was this time last year that we all got together with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to Light the Night and fight blood cancer. South Florida walkers raised more than half a million dollars for cancer research - an we aim to beat that number this year.

Join us Saturday, September 20th at Bayfront Park, Miami; Saturday, October 11th at Memorial Hospital Miramar; and Saturday, October 25th at Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale to Light the Night with illuminated balloons in support of cancer patients and survivors, and in memory of loved ones.

With lots of entertainment for the kids, it's a perfect event for the whole family.

You can get more details at the South Florida Light the Night site.

    Easier auto tag renewal

It's not often that a government entity offers us LESS red tape - but that's the case with the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles. I'm not sure how this one escaped me, but since January, we've had the option of renewing our vehicle registration for two years instead of one. For real.

You can renew online at www.gorenew.com.

    Archuleta Stands Up 2 cancer

Those who voted for David Archuleta on American Idol are coming through again, in an even bigger way.

David is one of thousands of people throughout the country who have joined Stand Up 2 Cancer and formed teams to raise funds for cancer research. It's an unprecedented joint effort from cancer survivors, celebrities and the t.v. networks. How often do ABC, CBS and NBC collaborate on their programming? Well, they did for the Stand Up 2 Cancer Telethon, and so far have raised more than 100 million dollars.

    Is your car safe?

With gas prices climbing for the past couple of years, most drivers are looking for cars that get good gas mileage. But if safety is also important to you, there's a new resource available from the government.

A new public database can be accessed that lets you see how many alleged deaths, injuries and cases of property damage involve specific passenger vehicles. The availability of the information is a direct result of a massive tire recall in 2000.

You can see the 'early warning' data at http://www.safercar.gov.

    Ike's Caribbean devastation

We got really lucky when Hurricane Ike stayed further south, keeping the category 4 storm far away from us. Our neighbors in the Caribbean have not been so lucky. The islands have been doused by Fay and Hanna, and Ike has just added more disaster to an already desparate situation.

Hundreds of people, including children, were killed in Haiti; homes are destroyed, towns are flooded.

While we breathe a sigh of relief, we can also offer relief to the islands:

The American Red Cross is acception donations of cash and supplies.
    Also accepting donations:
    Feed the Children
    Food for the Poor
    United Way of Miami Dade

While we don't yet know what the final damage to Cuba will be, when you see waves that are - literally - 5 stories high crashing into buildings, you can be sure aid will be necessary. Catholic Relief Services is legally able to provide relief.

    Serena goes all the way

Well, not only did Serena Williams beat big sister, Venus in the quarterfinals at the U.S. Open, she went on to beat Russia's Dinara Safina in the semi-finals, and then won the entire Championship, defeating Serbian Jelena Jankovic. Serena gets the trophy (and the big bucks), but perhaps more exciting - she reclaims her ranking as the #1 female tennis player in the world. Heady stuff ... and well-deserved!

    Wednesday, September 3, 2008

    Venus vs. Serena again

Imagine having to compete against your best friend ... who happens to also be your sister ... to achieve your own success.

It can't be easy for the Williams sisters, but still at the top of their game, Venus and Serena have both progressed to the Quarterfinal round at the U.S. Open Tennis Tournament this week. Tonight they play against each other to see who will go to the next round ... and perhaps eventually to the Final.

They've had to face each other on the tournament court 16 times since 1998. Remarkably, Venus has won 8 of the matchups and Serena has won 8. Who will win tonight? It'll be exciting to watch.

    Drying out

Two days of rain from Tropical Storm Fay and a lot of people are dealing with flood damage or wet homes from roof leaks.

Susan's got the mold issue covered on her blog - but how do you get everything dry? Different items need different care. Some tips from the Miami Herald:

Major flooding requires major help - for this you want to call a water damage restoration company ... and your insurance agent to find out what's covered.

Furniture: If furniture is in a carpeted area, either elevate the furniture off the carpet, or take it outside to dry in indirect sunlight.

Area rugs: These can also be taken outside to dry in indirect sunlight. If the rug is water-stained, take it to a dry cleaner as soon as possible. Unless it's a cheap throw rug you got at a discount store - dump it and get a new one.

Books & papers: Usually these need to be thrown away to avoid mold, running ink and rippled pages. However if papers are very important, freezing them will stop the ink running and prevent mold growth until you can get the papers to a professional.

    Gloria helps schools

Gloria Estefan is a true statesperson, giving back so much to the community.

We were all thrilled when she donated $10,000 last month to help The Humane Society get a new air conditioning system for their North Dade shelter.

Now she's established an Education Fund to help schools in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. A portion of proceeds from her October concert at the Seminole Hard Rock Live will go to the Education Fund.

    Olympic Excitement

When you get past the Olympic hype and the politics that have clouded this year's games, there's so much great athleticism to appreciate. Surpises and upsets have been coming regularly since the start of Beijing 2008.

Two members of the U.S. women's gymnastics team suffered last-minute injuries, leaving the 4 remaining gymnasts a little shaky at the start of the qualifying round. Despite deductions for landing out of bounds on the floor exercise and falling off the uneven bars (most unusual!), they managed to pull through in 2nd place behind China going into the finals.

One of the most exciting moments came in the Men's Swimming 4x100 Meter Relay. A member of the French team had been very vocal about coming to "smash" the Americans. Well, the U.S. Relay team, including Michael Phelps, poured it on to overtake the French in the last lap and take the Gold, winning by 8/100ths of a second! Perhaps nicer than the satisfaction of winning, was watching the two teams displaying ultimate sportsmanship, shaking hands after the medal ceremony.

You can keep up on all the sports, schedules, players and results at the official Beijing 2008 website.

    Surprise airline fees

Since 2001 we've gotten used to certain fees being added to the cost of flying. Fees for increased security? Sure, we have to have some way to pay the TSA for keeping us safe. Paying for our meals? Okay, at least they're better quality than what we used to get.

But now some airlines are charging extra for the most basic service of all - checking a suitcase.

Depending on what airline you fly, you may find yourself paying $15 for your first checked bag, $25 for the second, and $100 or more - per bag - for anything over two.

If you're thinking you'll just travel with a carry-on, be warned - those same airlines are starting to crack down on the size of the carry-on bag, so those overloaded bags that take up more space than they should won't be allowed any more.

While some airlines are still checking bags for free, you'll want to do the math when you're comparing ticket prices to see which total package is actually better priced. And it may be time to re-think how many gifts you bring back from vacation - or budget for the extra cost of bringing them home.

Here's a look at some of the top airlines and the fees they're charging.

    Nightmare on 95

Maybe it's just the growing pains that come with progress ... but the transition from the HOV lane to the 95 Express lanes has been less than smooth.

Instead of having one lane for High Occupancy Vehicals, we now have 2 lanes reserved for drivers willing to pay for the privilege of not having to slow down for exits. The express lanes debuted this week on 95 Northbound in Miami-Dade, running from the 112 to the Golden Glades Interchange. Unfortunately, confusion about how the lanes work has resulted in more accidents than usual.

The idea is to go straight from 112 to the Golden Glades without stopping - so there are no exits from the express lanes. If you need to exit anywhere between those 2 points, you have to stay to the right, out of the express lanes.

South Florida Commuter Services is doing their best to answer your questions at the website www.95express.com.

    Closer Opens

Reason to celebrate - Brenda's back. That's Brenda Lee Johnson, Deputy Chief Homicide Division, LAPD. "The Closer" returns to TNT tonight at 9 with Golden Globe Winner Kyra Sedgwick back to get more confessions from unsuspecting suspects.

As always, in addition to great mysteries to solve, there are so many moments to make you laugh - Brenda's quirks are always entertaining, whether she's comforting herself with sweets, hiding Kitty from the landlord or trying to find her ringing cellphone somewhere at the bottom of her tote bag.

By the way, if you think that tote is tres cool, you can actually own one - QVC is selling the whole line of Maxx New York totes and purses, including the one Brenda uses on the show. Just use 'closer' as your keyword search.

    Hot Pets

Literally, the pets at the Humane Society of Greater Miami, North Miami facility are hot. The air conditioning system broke down this week and needs to be replaced - to the tune of $85,000! It takes a lot of air to cool 200 furry friends ... and no doubt the employees and volunteers could use some a/c too.

We've had a fantastic response to our requests for assistance - including a $10,000 donation from the Gloria Estefan Foundation (bless you, Joyce for getting the word to Gloria) - but The Humane Society still needs another $15,000 to move forward installing a replacement unit.

I figure if just 15,000 people donate one dollar each, it's a breeze. Or if you and your co-workers each pitch in five bucks (and ask the boss to match your donation), we'll reach goal before the weekend's over.

You can donate online at the Humane Society's site, or call the LITE FM studios anytime this weekend and we'll take your pledge on the phone: 1-800-469-1015. Of course, you can always stop by The Humane Society at 16101 W. Dixie Highway (just south of 163rd street, North Miami Beach) to donate in person, or foster a dog or cat until the air is installed, or go ahead and adopt a life-long friend!

Thanks again to everyone who's helped out - we live in a wonderful, caring community!

    Independence Declared

A new study shows many college students don't know what the Declaration of Independence is about or who wrote it. As 4th of July approaches, here's a reminder of why the date is important as more than just a day off work or an opportunity to watch fireworks.

While we're at it, the White House has a page with links to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

    NHC Storm Prep Event

For years it was Frank Sheets, then Max Mayfield. Now, get to know Bill Read.

He's the new Director of the National Hurricane Center, the guy we'll be looking to for the definitive information about hurricanes throughout the season.

You'll have the opportunity to meet him this Wednesday at a Community Hurricane Preparedness Event at the Hurricane Grill and Wings in Deerfield Beach. Director Read will go over the 2008 hurricane predictions and discuss storm preparedness and survival.

    Lower Electric Bills

With gas over $4 a gallon, we're all trying to cut our expenses wherever we can. Well how about cutting your electric bill? With a better air conditioner, properly working ducts and better home insulation you can make a big difference in your energy use. Even better, FPL will not only help you figure out just what your home needs, they'll also help you pay for certain upgrades and repairs.

Here's the information about FPL's energy rebates.

    Oil & Tomato Detectives

Although the source of the salmonella-tainted tomatoes isn't know yet, the situation could have been far worse if the outbreak hadn't been caught early. USA Today has a fascinating story about how local health officials and the CDC worked together to discover what was making people sick.

They also have a report about the Commodity Futures Trading Commission's efforts to change regulations so they can more thoroughly investigate oil prices and uncover any sort of price manipulation.

Happy reading (I promise, it doesn't feel like homework)!

    Dump the Pump

I don't know about you, but I'm completely fed up with giving my money to oil companies.

As if in answer to our prayers, multiple South Florida transit organizations are getting together for "Dump the Pump" day on Thursday. We're encouraged to carpool, try a vanshare program and use public transport.

I actually went to the County Transit websites and found a bus route to get to work that's not nearly as compicated as I thought it would be. I'm going to pick out a good back and enjoy a nice leisurely ride, without the stress of people tailgating, cutting me off, or any of the other things that can drive us crazy driving in South Florida.

You can find the info about "Dump the Pump" day at www.1800234ride.com They also have links to both Miami Dade Transit and Broward County Transit so you can plan your own routes.

Together we can save money and the planet!

    Goodbye Tim Russert

Anyone who's watched "Meet the Press" in the past 17 years, or seen presidential debates in the last few elections, knows that Tim Russert was one of the few truly non-partisan journalists and moderators on television.

Tim died of an apparent heart attack this afternoon - he was only 58.

I will greatly miss his intelligence and reason in political reporting and interviewing.

His colleagues talk about his great love of his family, which was apparent in his book, 'Big Russ and Me' about his relationship with his father. Ironically it seems like a special gift in light of Father's Day this weekend.

    MSNBC has the story.

    Preview: Be Prosperous

Sometimes the best tips come from the most unexpected places. I was standing in line at the post office and heard two guys - yes guys - talking about how they save money on their packaging supplies. One re-uses Publix brown paper grocery bags, cutting them to fit the box; the other picked up a roll of packaging paper at the Dollar Store. And both agreed that you can save money letting the post office use their tape to seal the package. Smart, huh?

This Sunday morning on Be You Radio, we'll have some really great advice from a money expert - Randy Gage, the author of "Why You're Dumb, Sick and Broke ... and How to be Smart, Healthy and Rich". He has quite the fascinating personal story to share, along with tips for creating a mind-set to allow wealth come into your life.

Join Maria Soldani and Liz Sterling Sunday morning at 6 for Be You Radio in conjunction with Balance Magazine and the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women.

    Transform Yourself

Jillian Michaels, the kick-butt trainer on "The Biggest Loser" is in town this weekend, speaking at the EDiets Live seminar at the Embassy Suites, Fort Lauderdale.

I had a chance to talk with her and she's one of the nicest people I've encountered - and not surprisingly, incredibly motivational. I was going to skip going to the gym, but after talking to Jillian, I just had to go - she took away all my excuses (and believe me, I have plenty of them :) ).

If you think you don't have time to exercise, or you're too tired, here's what Jillian says:

"You get out of this life what you put in. So when you make your car payment, you have to work to make the money to pay for that car; when you pay your rent, or your mortgage, you have to work for the money to live in that house. Well it's the same with a healthy body. You have to work, you have to put in the time to have that healthy body, and you can make it fun.

Take a salsa class, take a spinning class, take a kickboxing class, get outdoors with your kids, walk your dog. Don't make it tedious, make it something fun - and if that still doesn't do it for you, I'm going to say, look - you know your health is the platform your entire life is sitting on top of. Your family, your job, your vitality, your sex life, everything. It's all sitting on top of your health. When you don't have that, everything else suffers.

Sit down and write a list of all the reasons that you're looking for motivation, whether you're a twenty year old and you wnat to look great at spring break, or you're a thirty year old and you want to be able to pick up your five year old, or you're a fifty five year old and you want to see your grandchild graduate from college. Write down all of the reasons that you want to be healthy and you want to be in shape. That's your source of motivation and inspiration.

If your wish list and your dreams and your goals don't inspire you to make a change, nothing's going to."

Powerful words. Powerful ideas. Powerful motivation.

That's Jillian. You can read more at her website, http://www.jillianmichaels.com/; and to get info and register for the seminar, go to http://www.edietslive.com/.

    Transform Anger

How many times have you gotten upset about something, sent out an angry e-mail and made the situation worse?

Maria Soldani, one of our hosts of Be You Radio on Sunday mornings, has the perfect solution.

Go ahead, type that e-mail! Say everything you want to say. Get it all out.

Then hit DELETE. Don't send it. Just the process of expressing your feelings will help you put things into perspective. Then you can find a more productive way to resolve what's upsetting you, whether it's talking to someone in person or accepting a situation you can't change.

Maria has some other great tips coping with a bad day, and she'll share them this Sunday morning at 6 on Be You Radio, when we talk about Being Transformed. The featured guest is Robert Ohoto, author of "Transforming Fate Into Destiny".

You can hear past shows at www.beyouradio.com, in conjunction with Balance Magazine and the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women.

    Dwindling Man Pool

If you feel like it's hard to find a good single man who wants to commit, you may be right.

According to research by author Carl Weisman, more men are choosing bachelorhood over marriage, not because they're afraid of marriage, but because they don't want to get into a bad marriage. Weisman says men are 10 times more scared of marrying the wrong person than of never getting married at all.

The study is the basis for Weisman's new book, "So Why Have You Never Been Married? Ten Insights Into Why He Hasn't Wed".

    Hurricane Preparedness

If you've lived in South Florida for at least a year then you're already familiar with the message for the next 6 months - Be Prepared!

Hurricane season runs June 1st through November 30th. Emergency agencies are concerned that people will be unprepared after 2 relatively quiet seasons. But remember, it doesn't matter how many storms there are - all it takes is one hitting us to do plenty of damage.

So along with the basic prep supplies that you already know about - bottled water, canned food, a manual can opener, batteries and radio - remember to keep an extra supply of medicines, baby needs and pet food on hand. A camera is also a good idea so you can take pictures for the insurance company in case you do sustain storm damage. In fact, it's advised that you also take pictures of your possessions in advance and keep them stored somewhere that they won't be damaged if there is a storm.

The Miami Dade-County Office of Emergency Management has set up a service for you to receive e-mail and wireless alerts - you can sign up at their website. You can also request a free hurricane preparedness handbook by calling 311.

The Broward County Office of Emergency Management has preparedness guides, shopping guides and other resources that you can download.

And if you want to be informed like a meteorologist, you can always go directly to the National Hurricane Center website for the latest storm information.

Let's all hope for another quiet year!

    Summer: Camp or Job?

If money's tight because of the economy (what's it cost to fill your gas tank now?), this might be the year for the kids to earn some money of their own instead of spending yours.

The Minority Chamber of Commerce is hosting the Part Time Job Fair today from 2 - 7 p.m. at The Mall of the Americas, at 79th Avenue & Flagler. It's an easy and efficient way for studetns to meet representatives and community employers hiring for part-time jobs, internship positions and volunteer opportunities.

If you want more info about this and future job fairs that the Chamber is sponsoring, call 786-260-1965, or email events@minoritychamber.net.

Of course, if you're kids are too young to work, keep in mind that many local communities have free or low-cost summer camps. Check with your city's Parks & Recreation Department.

    Carrie's Back!

No, not the scary one from the Stephen King movie. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda ... along with Mr. Big - all return for "Sex and the City", opening May 30th.

I was wondering if they'd be able to re-create the magic of the show now that 4 years have passed. But if today's Oprah show is any indication, it's going to be fantastic. If you missed it, you can see the whole cast with Oprah on her website.

Of course we can't give away any secrets, but they showed a tantalizing clip of Carrie & Mr. Big talking about an apartment together.

The movie website has more tidbits, just in case you want to see what crazy expensive fashions Carrie wears now.

    Carly, Carole & Joni

Before Madonna, Mariah and Whitney were musical idols, Carly Simon, Carole King and Joni Mitchell were the female icons to emulate.

It's always been a challenge for women in the music industry, especially challenging to stay true to their art. So how did they do it? Get some insight in the new book, "Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and the Journey of a Generation".

The stories of how Carole Klein became Carole King and how Carly Simon first met her future husband (and ex), James Taylor - who was dating Joni Mitchell at the time - are fascinating and entertaining. Despite their stardom, they've faced the same issues at work and in relationships that we all do.

    Silk for Mom

Mother's Day is just around the corner - May 11th. Are you at a loss for what to get Mom for a gift? Of course we all know that just spending time with her is the best gift you can give, right? But if you do want to have something wrapped in a package to hand her, consider this.

Instead of the traditional perfume, jewelry or sweater, how about a silk or satin pillowcase? It's one of those little luxuries that Mom might not buy for herself. And the benefits go beyond just the sigh of comfort when you put your head on the pillow.

Both silk and satin can help eliminate the morning 'bed-head' look, when your hair is trying to go in all directions at the same time. They also help minimize sleep lines on the face, keep your skin better moisturized, and feel cool even on a hot South florida night.

Do you have any suggestions for non-traditional Mother's Day gifts? Post a comment.

    Idols Not Idle

If you've been upset about American Idol contestants being voted off before you thought they should go, worry not - all of the Top Ten finalists will take part in the American Idol Tour. The tour dates have been released. You know how they always talk about how hard they have to work during the show? The tour is no different - they'll be appearing in 50 cities in just a few months! That includes their show at the BankAtlantic Center August 20th. Tickets go on sale May 17th.

    Animal babies

Other than human babies, is there anything cuter than a baby animal? Animal Planet has a whole series called "Growing Up", which features a baby Giant Panda, baby seals, baby hyena, moose and gorilla, each in their own one-hour special.

    Hard to believe that this:

will eventually be up to 6 feet tall and 350 pounds!
Maybe eating 40 pounds a day of bamboo has something to do with it???!

    Howie Do It!

Howie Mandel has once again endeared himself to viewers as host of 'Deal or No Deal'. He's endeared himself to network execs too - no surprise - when you make money for them, they're always happy! So they'll be bringing us more Howie, in the form of 'Howie Do It', a new sitcom that he'll produce and star in. Don't know what it'll be about yet - it's going to be "unscripted", so Howie can adlib (which will probably be funnier than having a script ... ).

    Friday, April 18, 2008

    What did they say?

Sometimes you can sing a song for years without even realizing that you have no idea what the words are. At least that's what just happened to me with the Bee Gees' "You Should Be Dancing". Thanks to the internet, I know all the words now.

    Connect to Earth & Self

This coming Sunday on Be You Radio, we'll talk about Being Connected.

There are a lot of ways to be connected ... to people, the planet, the internet, yourself. We'll be focusing on connecting to our planet, with Ed Begley Jr. as our guest. His life has changed a lot since his days on "St. Elsewhere". He has his own show now, "Living With Ed", and he's become quite the expert on conservation. In honor of Earth Day next week, we'll get some great tips from Ed on how to go green at home - and save money!

There are still a few seats left at the 4th Annual Work-Life Balance Educational Conference for Women on Wednesday, April 23rd. The theme? Be Empowered, Be Inspired, Be Connected. Oh, there's that word again. The Conference is a fantastic opportunity to connect with lots of other businesswomen - about 1500. Plus, with keynote speakers Janet Bray Attwood, Bonnie St. John and Naomi Judd, you'll get lots of inspiration to connect with yourself. I can't wait - last year's Conference was one of the best I've ever been to, and this year will be even better! I hope to see you there.

And join me, Liz Sterling, Maria Soldani and Susie Levan for Be You Radio on LITE FM, this Sunday morning at 6. You can also listen to past shows & interviews at www.beyouradio.com.

    Rebate Recycling

So, what do to with the tax rebate you'll get from the IRS?

The Miami Herald has some great ideas, ranging from being extravagant to being 'savings savvy'.

    Tax Countdown

Here it is again - almost tax day, and I know I'm not the only one who's waited until the last minute to get my papers together.

There's a little extra incentive to file on-time this year - that tax rebate. Anywhere from $300 to $600, depending on what you qualify for. The thing is, the IRS won't know what you qualify for until they get your tax return - so if you file an extension, you'll have to wait that much longer to get the rebate.

The IRS website explains the rebates and the Earned Income Tax Credit and the rules about extensions and payments in as simple a way as anything to do with taxes can be. Check it out here.

    Inspire Empower Connect

We've been hearing those words a lot lately ... it's the theme for the 4th Annual Work-Life Balance Educational Conference coming up April 23rd at Signature Grand. What a perfect way to describe the day - after last year's Day of Balance, I did feel Inspired, Empowered and Connected.

There are still some seats left to join LITE FM, keynote speaker Naomi Judd, and about 1500 businesswomen for a day that's all about you.

Naomi is an awesome speaker - I saw her at one of our Women's Club Luncheons a few years ago and I still have the page of notes I took with all the wisdom she had to share from living a challenging life. To look at her now, it's hard to imagine that she was a victim of domestic abuse, a single mom, a Hepatitis C survivor - she overcame it all; so it seems fitting that she'll be our guest on Be You Radio this Sunday morning at 6 on LITE FM to talk about Being Empowered.

    FCATS for dogs

I'm not sure what criteria they used, but experts have determined the smartest and dumbest breeds of dogs. Where does your poodle, retriever, lab, pekingese, etc. fall in the list?

    Have a look.

Regardless of IQ, they're all awfully cute!

By the way, if you disagree with the results and want to prove them wrong, CBS is looking for America's Most Talented Dogs for a reality series.

    Idol Gives Back 2008

Wednesday night, American Idol does it again - bringing together a stellar lineup of celebrities to help raise money for children's charities around the world. This year's Idol Gives Back will feature guest appearances from former Idol contestants & winners including Fantasia, Chris Daughtry, Carrie Underwood and Elliot Yamin; along with Brad Pitt, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Gloria Estefan. And more.

Money raised from the event will benefit The Children's Defense Fund, Children's Health Fund, The Global Fund, Make It Right, Malaria No More and Save the Children.

The show starts earlier than usual - 7:30 p.m. Oh, and the elimination this week will be pushed to Thursday.

    Monday vs. Friday

Bryan and I were debating which day is better to have off for a three-day weekend - Monday or Friday. Fridays are great because the weekend comes faster, but I always feel like I should DO something when my weekend starts on Friday. Mondays are also great - you get back to work on Tuesday, and it feels like the work week is already half over!

Ultimately, we decided that ANY day is great for a day off!

What I didn't know is that Wikipedia actually has an entry for three-day weekend, with terms used around the world to describe the long weekend (or "oval", as they say in Norway). It was also enlightening to see how many other cultures go straight to the FOUR-day weekend.

Couldn't we at least have a daily siesta?

    Fighting Autism

Autism is getting lots of attention lately, with 1 in 150 children diagnosed with the illness. Celebrities like Dan Marino and Jenny McCarthy are speaking out for more research to determine what causes autism, screening for earlier diagnosis and insurance coverage.

Florida Governor Charlie Crist is also urging insurance companies to cover at least a portion of autism treatment - which can cost tens of thousands of dollars a year.

I'll be at the Autism Speaks "Walk Now For Autism" on Saturday, April 12th at Nova Southeastern University. I hope you'll take a little time to join me for an inspiring morning and an opportunity to help children and families touched by autism.

    Rod's new clothes

Rod Stewart doesn't design them, but his song titles and lyrics grace them ... a line of clothes and accessories. Who could resist a baby bib that says "You're In My Heart, You're In My Soul"? Or a t-shirt that says "You Wear it Well". I'd just want to be careful about where I wear the "Tonight's The Night' design - probably not ideal for a first date!

    Midlife: balanced, miraculous

Most of us associate the word "midlife" with the word "crisis". But Marianne Williamson has a 'new and improved' way of looking at it in her latest book, "The Age of Miracles: Embracing the New Midlife".

As you'll hear in her interview with Liz Sterling on this Sunday's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, midlife doesn't have to be an endpoint where joyous experiences are a thing of the past, only to be looked back on. Rather, it's a new beginning, an opportunity to re-shape your life and seek out your dreams with the wisdom you can only gain from living the years leading up to this point.

Everyone has their own experience of midlife, and it can be at any age (hey, I had my first mid-life crisis when I was 20!). Just remember, one can be mentally old when they're chronologically young, and vice versa. It's your state of mind that determines how old - or young - you feel and act.

Join me, Liz, Maria Soldani and Susie Levan for the Lite Review on Be You Radio this Sunday morning at 6, in conjunction with the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine.

Also, be sure to register for this week's LITE FM Office Stress Break to win your spot on the LITE FM guest list for the 4th Annual Work-Life Balance Educational Conference for Women, April 23rd, with keynote speakers Naomi Judd, Janet Bray Attwood and Bonnie St. John. It's going to be a fantastic day to Be Empowered, Be Inspired and Be Connected. I'll see you there!

    Spring Clean Your Self

What did you have planned for spring cleaning this year? Emptying the garage? Finally clearing out the junk drawer in the kitchen? Throwing up your hands in defeat?

Here's a different angle to try - instead of focusing on the physical cleaning of your house, work on a spiritual cleaning for yourself.

According to Dr. Kathleen Hall, founder of The Stress Institute, stress leaves us depleted of energy. To replenish yourself and make your life more fulfilling, try this version of Spring Cleaning:

    seek out S.P.R.I.N.G. -

    S - Serenity
P - Pause to reflect on life
R - Rituals that make you happy
    I - Intention; re-assess your purpose
    N -Nature
    G - Give to others

    Tennis is Fashionable

Tennis has come a long way from the days when everybody wore unflattering, too-short, white shorts and polos.

Credit the Williams Sisters for taking fashion on the court to a whole new level - sometimes I watch as much to see what they'll be wearing as how well they're playing (I really can't figure out how they can concentrate with those giant earrings, but then I feel constricted just wearing a watch!).

And the guys have followed suit, too. Rafael Nadal's capris, Roger Federer's sophisticated black outfit ...

This year's Sony Ericsson Open on Key Biscayne (now through April 6th), will once again feature the Sony Ericsson Open Fashion Park. Three fashion shows are scheduled throughout the tournament, including the introduction of Venus Williams' clothing line "EleVen". Much like Sara Jessica Parker's "Bitten" line, "EleVen" is also a collection of cute, everyday, reasonably priced clothing and accessories (yes, there's a tennis bracelet), and like "Bitten", it's only available at Steve and Barry's.

Oh - and if you're interested in what's happening on the courts, you can get the daily updates at www.sonyericssonopen.com.

    Idol Camp

Do you think your kid is as talented as the 'American Idol' finalists? Or more talented, even! Well, you may be able to give your child a taste of the Idol experience without having to go through that massive auditioning process ... although it's not cheap.

For just $2995 (yes, some scholarships are available), kids age 10 - 15 will have the opportunity to hone their skills with experts in the music industry and former Idol finalists, at Idol Camp, a two-week sleepaway camp in the California mountains.

They'll learn about singing, dancing, acting and more, with a big show for parents at the end of the session.

As you might expect, attendance is limited to 400 campers per session - with 5 sessions ... so if that $2995 is sounding like just the right amount for a great vacation, you could also consider checking out some of our local theatres - most of them have summer arts camps for kids.

    Balance: Be authentic

Here's your mid-week Moment of Balance brought to you by the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be empowered, be inspired and be connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, we'll talk about how to Be Authentic.

Have you ever found yourself agreeing with someone just to avoid conflict … even though you don’t really agree? Or pretended to like something to impress a date (did you really want to spend the day watching drag racing)? Oh ... what about laughing at something that you don't really think is funny?! It leaves you with an empty feeling.

When you embrace who you really - your authentic self - you’ll be more at ease with your decisions and your life, because you’re following your true desires. Besides, it’s your uniqueness that makes you interesting.

Join us this Sunday morning at 6 on Be You Radio on 101.5 LITE FM to hear more about Being Authentic.

Hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani from the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women will welcome Debbie Ford, author of “Why Good People Do Bad Things”; and Jan Knight of Knight Financial Services, who will share information about the “imposter syndrome”.

    Olympic flame lights up

The 2008 Olympics are coming up in August, but the Beijing Olympic Torch will be lit in Greece on March 24th to begin the Olympic Torch Relay.

The official Beijing Olympic website has all the information about the Summer Games - 28 sports, more than 10,000 athletes and twice as many reporters! It's also a great place to learn a bit about Chinese culture and the preparations Beijing is making to welcome guests from around the world.

    Too much green beer?

Fun-loving Americans that we are, we've turned St. Patrick's Day into an opportunity to celebrate all things Irish ... including a night at the pub and a glass of Guiness.

If you find that you haven't eaten quite enough Shepherd's Pie or Corn Beef & Cabbage to soak up the lager, remember that AAA is once again offering free Tow-To-Go services all this weekend (for those who need 3 days to celebrate St. Patrick's Day...).

Keep the number handy - 1-800-AAA-HELP.

Of course, having a designated driver is a great option. AAA even recommends some ways to thank your designated driver:

    • Pay for parking or gas
    • Pay for your driver's food and drink (non-alcoholic, of course)
    • Offer to be designated driver next time you go out
Have a safe celebration, and slainte (cheers)!

    Balanced and Strong

Here's your mid-week Moment of Balance brought to you by the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be empowered, be inspired and be connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, we'll talk about how to Be Strong - not just physically, but emotionally.

Bonnie St. John, one of the keynote speakers at the upcoming Work-Life Balance Educational Conference for Businesswomen on April 23rd, is a beacon of strength - an amputee who's a silver medalist for skiing in the Paralympics. She'll be with us Sunday to share some of her story.

In the meantime, when you're faced with your own challenges, here are a few things to do:

    1. Remind yourself of other difficult situations you've been in and how you conquered them.

    2. Ask yourself how much this will matter in 10 years ... 5 years ... or even in a week. Sometimes in the middle of a challenge, it seems more important than it will be in the big picture.

    3. Trust your instincts. Think of times when you've made a decision despite what you felt in your gut - and later found out your first instinct was correct.

You'll hear much more about Being Strong this Sunday morning at 6 on Be You Radio on 101.5 LITE FM. Hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani from the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women will welcome Bonnie St. John and Nancy De Jesus of Bio-Med Wellness.

You can also hear podcasts of previous shows at BeYouRadio.com.

    Feed your brain

No, I'm not quoting Grace Slick with "feed your head" - I'm talking about keeping your brain functioning at its best. As part of National Brain Awareness Month, The Pilot Club of Miami is hosting the Third Annual "Feed Your Brain" Book Fair.

It's this Thursday, March 13th at Barnes & Noble in Pembroke Pines (11820 Pines Blvd). From 4 to 8 p.m., you and the kids can enjoy puppet shows with The Brainminder Buddies who teach about protecting your brain for life and how to play safe and pay smart.

But it's not just for kids. With so many people living longer, Alzheimer's and dementia are more of a concern than ever. In some ways, your brain is like any other muscle - the more you exercise it, the stronger it'll be. Pilot Interntional can offer tips for adults too.

Here's one to start working on your memory ... how many digits of the number pi can you remember? Okay, just kidding - reading, doing crosswords and soduku are great brain exercise - you don't have to be a math genius!

    Be Balanced and Focused

Here's your mid-week Moment of Balance brought to you by the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be empowered, be inspired and be connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, we'll talk about how to Be Focused, in your personal life and at work.

If you're having difficulty staying focused at work, take a look at what might be the cause.

    1. Are you getting enough sleep? Not only can a lack of sleep make it hard to concentrate, when you're tired you're more likely to be irritable and more easily stressed out.

    2. Are there distractions in the office? A lot of noise, people walking by, phones ringing, all those little things that vie for your attention. If necessary - and if you're allowed - wear headphones to cancel out the noise (better yet, plug the headphones into the radio and listen to LITE FM!). If you can, sit facing the wall, rather than the door of the office - you'll be less likely to look up everytime someone passes by, and co-workers will be less likely to stop in for idle chat.

    3. Are you passionate about your work? It's tough to stay focused on something you don't care about. Take some time to determine your true goals and desires and seek work that keeps you on that path. If you're already in the right field, but just feeling a little burnt out, make a list of the good things about your job and your company. It will help revive your enthusiasm.

You'll hear much more about Being Focused this Sunday morning at 6 on Be You Radio on 101.5 LITE FM. Join hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani from the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women, along with Kundalini Yoga instructor, Jiwan Kaur, and Gary Snodgrass, author of "Stepping Up: 12 Ways to Rev Up, Revitalize or Renew Your Career".

You can also hear podcasts of previous shows at BeYouRadio.com.

    Oprah's Book Club Live

As if Oprah doesn't have enough to do between her t.v. show, radio, Oxygen network, O Magazine, Live Your Best Life Tours and more ... now she'll be taking 90 minutes out every Monday night for 2 and a half months to lead live Webinars of her newest Book Club selection, "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle.

I wasn't sure I'd enjoy sitting in front of the computer for another 90 minutes, but I liked "The Power of Now" by Tolle, so I figured I'd see what it was like. I have to say, it's pretty amazing to be watching online and know that half a million people from all over the world are not only tuned in, but that you can submit questions and see their feedback, too. What an amazing way to bring people together.

There were some glitches with the first night's video download, but they're working on that for next week. In the meantime, you can watch, listen or read a transcript of the Webinar at Oprah's website.

    Entertainment pick of the week

If "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" has been on your list of favorite comedy films ever since you saw it, then you'll definitely want to see "Spamalot". And if you never saw the movie, but you've enjoyed even one episode of Monty Python on t.v., then rent the movie and then go see the play.

Original Monty Python cast member Eric Idle co-wrote this outrageously funny musical comedy take-off on the movie, and he's brilliantly re-created the beloved silly humor of the film.

I don't usually remember lines or specific scenes from movies, but "Holy Grail" had so many moments I'll never forget - from the coconut-clacking substitute for real horses to the guy who insists "I'm not dead yet", to the killer rabbit (not so docile as the rapidly reproducing rabbits in the Visa Check Card commercial). You probably have plenty of your own favorite unforgettable moments from this classic.

"Spamalot" captures them all and adds plenty more, along with a whole soundtrack of funny and catchy songs. It's not surprising the Broadway show won the Tony awards for Best Musical - and don't be surprised if you catch yourself bursting into spontaneous laughter weeks after you see the show as random memories of different scenes cross your mind. (You'll never think of Finland in quite the same way. Schlip schlop.)

"Spamalot" is at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts (formerly the Carnival Center) through Sunday. You can order tickets online.

    Balance through Organization

Here's your mid-week Moment of Balance brought to you by the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be empowered, be inspired and be connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, you'll learn how to Get Organized.

Here are some quick tips to get you started:

    1. You've heard the phrase "a home for everything and everything in its home". Well, it works. When you designate specific drawers, shelves or containers for particular items, it's a breeze to put them where they belong, instead of leaving them in another pile in the kitchen.

    2. Take 10 minutes at the end of each day to put things away. When you have those "homes" designated, you can accomplish a lot in a little time. And taking a little time each day will keep the mess from building up and becoming overwhelming.

    3. Keep just one master to-do list or notebook. Every time you write something on a scrap of paper or a post-it note, transfer it to the notebook. This way won't lose hours searching for that phone number you need right now.

You'll get lots of great tips for Being Organized - and re-claiming your time - this Sunday morning at 6 on Be You Radio on 101.5 LITE FM. Join hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani from the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women, along with Diane Hatcher from TimeSavers USA and Maria Murphy of Simply Put Together for a fun and informative morning.

    Reading is Big in Miami

All this month, The Florida Center for the Literary Arts has given us our own version of Oprah's Book Club - it's called "The Big Read". This year's selection is "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston (yes, it's on Oprah's list too).

Miami Dade College has been hosting book discussions, encouraging readers to more fully explore the novel's themes -- including oppression and empowerment, and women's dependence and autonomy during the early part of the 20th century.

One of the most exciting events associated with this year's The Big Read is "Renaissance in Harlem". It's a musical performance that recreates the musical joy of Harlem in the 1930's, along with a reading of Zora Neale Hurston's works.

You can catch performances March 13th at Miami Dade's Wolfson Campus at 7:30 p.m., and March 14th at the North Dade Regional Library (2455 N.W. 183rd Street) at 7:00 p.m.

*** If you've ever wondered, "what's the big deal about book clubs?", I have to tell you, when you hear other people's views of a book, you get a much deeper understanding of the ideas being written about and it really enhances your experience.
Some friends and I had a book club going for a while. We would turn discussion night into a party - we served food that fit the theme of the book, and if there was a movie version, we'd watch it and that would lead to another whole conversation about how different a movie interpretation of a book can be.
One of my personal book club favorites is still "1984" by George Orwell. And here are more "Big Read" recommended books. But anything you're interested in is a perfect starting point.
Feel free to share your favorites so I can post them here!

When a loser is a winner

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I've just recently gotten hooked on "The Biggest Loser". Once I realized that they really work to improve people's health, and deal with the issues have brought the cast members to the point they've reached, I found it inspiring - and motivating! Sometimes it's just the extra push I need to get myself to the gym and work out (mind you, my workout is nothing like what they go through on the show!).

Well, if you've ever dreamed of being able devote all your time to eating right and exercising, without having to worry about fitting it in to your work schedule, or in-between picking up the kids from school and running errands, you might want to stop by the Festival Flea Market in Pompano on Saturday. NBC is casting teams for next season.

    Here's what they're looking for:

"We are currently looking for outgoing and charismatic TEAMS OF 2 who have personality along with the WANT, DESIRE and COMPETITIVE EDGE to vie for this all-expense-paid chance of a lifetime and compete to win $250,000!

*While we will do our best to see everyone, we guarantee the first 500 people in line will be seen. Please do not line up more than 3 hours before the start time. *Please bring a non-returnable photo of you and your partner."

    FESTIVAL FLEA MARKET MALL
    2900 West Sample Rd.Pompano Beach, FL 33073
    10AM - 5PM
    Saturday, February 23rd

If you can't be there Saturday, you still have time to send in a videotaped audition. You can download the application - and get complete instructions here.

    Good luck!

    Total Eclipse of the Moon

If it's a clear night, we could have one of the best views of Wednesday night's Total Lunar Eclipse - and since the next Total Eclipse won't happen until December 21st, 2010 - you might consider being lenient with the kids' bedtime. In fact, a backyard campout might be called for.

A lunar eclipse happens when the earth passes between the sun and the moon, blocking the sun's rays. In a process that takes several hours, the Earth casts a shadow on the moon until it's completely covered. However, depending on how much dust is in the Earth's atmosphere, the moon can take on color, appearing red or orange, sometimes with a yellow or blue rim.

The free show begins at 8:43 p.m. Eastern Standard Time as a partial eclipse begins. The Total Eclipse should happen from around 10:01 p.m. to 10:51 p.m. ... then returning to a partial eclipse, and a fully visible moon again by 12:09 a.m.

NASA has all the scientific detail available, in case you want to know more. Or you can just drag a lounge chair outside and enjoy the experience.

    Relax with chocolate & roses

It's been the tradition since Valentine's Day became a celebration of love and romance - Valentine's chocolate and roses, perhaps with some bubbly to complete the package (always good for a proposal, too).

Well, Presh Medspa in Fort Lauderdale has found a way for you to delight in all three, with no calories, no headaches and no dying flowers.

Their Valentine specials include delicious indulgences for the whole body. Here's just a sample:

    *Wild Rose Relaxation Body Treatment
Your treatment begins with a creamy body polish to reveal fresh glowing skin. Next your body will be pampered with a warm relaxation wrap using luxurious European Rose body mud to seal in moisture and protect your skin

    *Chocolate Indulgence Pedicure
Drench your feet in a warm chocolate bath, scented with chocolate essential oil. Exfoliate your feet with a chocolate sugar scrub, chocolate scented masque and finish with a sweet sugar oil massage.

    *Champagne Facial
Revitalize your skin amidst the opulent aroma of champagne. This deep cleansing and purifying treatment utilizes vitamins and botanicals to tone, firm and detoxify the skin for a younger looking, more radiant appearance. Indulge further as you sip a glass of bubbly while completing your treatment with the ultimate hand and foot massage.

*Pampering Rose Hand Treatment and Manicure
Start with a creamy micro-buff polish massaged over your hands to help exfoliate and smooth rough edges. Your hands are then enveloped in a warm rose mud to seal in moisture while delivering important nutrients to the skin. A relaxing hand massage completes this highly enjoyable experience.

Oh, and how could I forget the Chocolate Cellulite Therapy Body Wrap!
Who knew chocolate was good for cellulite? The treatment begins with a chocolate chip body exfoliation followed by a wrap in a warm chocolate emulsion. Inhale the rich aroma, as you allow the cocoa to penetrate and smooth your skin.

By the way, this doesn't have to be just a gift for your sweetheart. Treat yourself, too - there's always the option of the Couples Massage.

With treats like this, I'd like it to be Valentine's all year long!

    Balance in Loving

Here's our mid-week Moment of Balance, brought to you by The Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be Empowered, be Inspired and be Connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, you'll hear Gay Hendricks, , author of "Conscious Loving" talking about how to keep love alive in your relationship. And with Valentine's Day a week away, romantic love is certainly on our minds.

But as a way of balancing your life, try thinking about being loving toward everyone and everything. Look for the positive in your work, your home, the people around you - and share those positive thoughts.

I had a reminder of this when I was visiting a friend in the hospital this week. His brother and I were talking about how Mark always finds something nice to say about people. You can walk in feeling and looking awful, and he'll say "You look gooood!". The ripple effect is amazing - next thing you know you do feel good, and then you share that with someone else, and they share it with someone else ... you get my drift.

Making people feel good is just one way to be loving.

You'll hear more about Being Loving on Be You Radio this Sunday morning at 6, with your hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani of the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women. And if you'd like to hear previous week's programs, visit http://www.beyouradio.com/, for the podcasts.

**By the way - if you were inspired by last week's program about Being Passionate, and want to go further in finding your passions, there's a fabulous "Passion Test" seminar on February 20th, led by Susie Levan, publisher of Balance Magazine. Seating is limited, so call for your reservations: 954-382-4325.

    Where your tax dollars go

Following the passing of Amendment 1 to reduce property taxes, Florida's Chief Financial Officer, Alex Sink, has launched a website to help educate residents about local government finances and how our money is spent.

"Your Local Government Dollars and Cents" is Sink's effort to get people more engaged in local government spending. She says with governments actively cutting their budgets, it's essential for Floridians to make it clear what their priorities are for their communities.

You'll have access to information about local government spending, including amounts spent on schools, tranportation, public safety and more. Remember, it's YOUR money that's being spent.

Balance your life - find passion

Here's our mid-week Moment of Balance, brought to you by The Work-Life Balance Institute for Women and Balance Magazine, helping you to be Empowered, be Inspired and be Connected.

On this Sunday morning's edition of Be You Radio on LITE FM, you'll hear Janet Bray Attwood, author of "The Passion Test" talking about how to find Passion in your life.

Now, with Valentine's Day just a couple of weeks away, you may associate passion with your love life. But finding passion in all aspects of life is critical to finding success and happiness.

Here are some tips for creating passion in your life:

    1. Find out what you're good at.
    2. Believe that you can succeed at anything you try.
    3. Have goals to work toward - not just at work, but also for your health, your family, relationships and hobbies.
    4. Enjoy achieving the short-term goals and let those achievements drive you toward your long-term goals.
    5. Appreciate what you have every single day. That includes the people in your life. Don't take them for granted.
    6. Take chances! Step outside your comfort zone and you'll find new things that you're good at and can be passionate about.
    7. Remember, it's not just about the end point. Enjoy the journey!

You'll hear more about Being Passionate on Be You Radio this Sunday morning at 6, with your hosts Liz Sterling and Maria Soldani of the Work-Life Balance Institute for Women. And if you'd like to hear previous week's programs, visit http://www.beyouradio.com/, for the podcasts.

**If you're really interested in finding your passions, there's a fabulous "Passion Test" seminar on February 20th, led by Susie Levan, publisher of Balance Magazine. Seating is limited, so call for your reservations: 954-382-4325.

    Mercy! Feb. is Heart Month

    2/4/08

Last week's Women's Heart Symposium with Mercy Hospital was not only interesting and educational, but so much fun, too!

Dr. Monica Monasa, the cardiologist from The Heart Center at Mercy, made all those medical terms easy to understand. In fact, if you weren't able to get to the symposium, she'll be our guest on South Florida Spotlite this Sunday night at 11:30.

A lot of our heart health breaks down to a numbers game:
Where's your blood pressure? What are your cholesterol levels? Is your weight appropriate fro your height? And how much time do you spend telling the doctor if something's wrong?

I would never have thought of that, but Dr. Monasa pointed out that, even now, women are still not taken as seriously by many doctors as men are. So when we get into the doctor's office, we need to get right to the point about what's bothering us - and be specific. Dr. Monasa estimates that a woman has about 3 minutes to get to "the heart of the matter", pun intended.

So take 5 minutes while you're waiting and write down your concerns. If the doctor asks about the family and the kids, wait until after you've discussed your health to give the personal update.

    1/31/08

Have you picked out your red outfit for tomorrow? Okay, so if you're not feeling that bold, you can at least wear the Red Dress Pin from the American Heart Association, or even red lipstick or a red tie. Anything to celebrate National Wear Red Day, the kickoff of Heart Month, and a day to raise awareness about heart disease in women.

Kids are doing their part by taking part in Jump Rope For Heart to benefit the Heart Association.
And they're setting a great example for us - what a great heart-healthy activity (although for those of us who found the bouncing a bit hard on the knees and other body parts - walking is excellent, too!).

    1/29/08

It's very possible that you've never worried about your heart (except when it's broken). But thanks to the doctors at The Heart Center at Mercy Hospital and the experts at The American Heart Association, I've been learning a lot - and it's not something to ignore.

Heart disease is the #1 killer of women. Yep. It outranks even breast cancer.

And the scary thing is, it affects even young women, and often there are no outward signs of heart disease.

February is Heart Month and we'll be posting heart health tips throughout the month on our Red Page. But why wait to get the facts? You can join me tomorrow night (Wednesday, January 30th) at Mercy Hospital's Women's Heart Symposium. It's a free event at The Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. Cardiologist Dr. Monica Manasa will enlighten us about the things we need to do to prevent and deal with heart disease, in "From Our Heart to Yours".

You can call for reservations - 305-286-2929.
